![]() ![]() ![]() These were the concerns of the early Moravian teachers of the school in the 18th century, and they continue to be the focus of the institution in the 21st century.įrom the beginning, the school has been dedicated to female education. The school placed its chief emphasis upon the individual pupil. ![]() This included an emphasis on physical wellness and exercise, the promotion of high standards for its students and faculty, and attention to the whole student for the development of her character as well as her mind. Early administrators outlined the intention of the faculty to develop girls and young women according to their individual needs. The school catalogs of the 19th century clearly demonstrate common elements of the school’s philosophy that have remained consistent throughout its history from its earliest days. During its long history, the institution has developed into Salem Academy, a college preparatory school for girls in grades 9 through 12, Salem College, a liberal arts school for women, and The Fleer Center for adult education, as well as a graduate program, open to men and women. Today, the Academy and College share a 47-acre campus at its original location in the heart of Old Salem, part of the city of Winston-Salem. Remarkably, the school has always remained in operation even during wars and pandemics. Although no longer a part of the Moravian Church, the history of the school has been an integral part of the town of Salem. It is the oldest educational institution for both girls and women in the United States. In her spare time, Kris likes to quilt, crochet, and cross stitch, and is learning to knit.Salem Academy and College began as a school for young girls in 1772 in the Moravian town of Salem, North Carolina which had been established just six years earlier by Moravian missionaries. She assists with the children and youth bible studies as well as music and drama ministries. Her entire family is very active at their church, Covenant Baptist Fellowship, where her husband Sam is the pastor. Kris has two children, Breanna and Matthew. Kris has led workshops on learning mathematics through art, particularly Calculator Art, for various high schools as well as at NCCTM State Conferences. Kris is very active in professional circles through her memberships in the Mathematics Association of America (MAA), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) as well as the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM). During her time at the Academy, Kris has taught Algebra Two, Advanced Functions & Modeling, Pre-Calculus, Calculus AB (Calculus One), and Calculus BC (Calculus Two). Having graduated from Salem College with first-hand experience in the world single-sex education, Kris is passionate about Salem Academy’s mission to educate and prepare young ladies not only for college but also for their future. Kris Porazzi Sorrells earned her MA in Mathematics (1998) from Wake Forest University and her BS in Mathematics from Salem College (1996), where she also received the Elisabeth Oesterlein Award. We share a beautiful Fine Arts Center and state-of-the-art Athletic Complex with the College we also offer dual enrollment classes on our own campus so that students may receive college credit from teachers in their own academic community. Our beautiful grounds are adjacent to Salem College, and many of our seniors take classes at the College during their senior year. Since 1772, Salem Academy has provided girls in grades 9-12 an outstanding college preparatory education. ![]()
